Web Design

Before my sophomore year of high school, I attended the MIPA Summer Workshop's Website Boost Camp, where I was able to learn how to redesign a website using SNO. I further advanced these skills at the following summer workshop. When I became the Online Editor in Chief, one of my goals was to redesign our website for a cleaner, more user-friendly interface. On top of this, I put more emphasis on taking our own photos and ensuring that every story had an image to go with it. Below are some before and after images from my redesign of the site.

For the home page, I wanted a more fresh, minimalist look. My Print Editor in Chief and I decided to modernize the previous InPrint logo. I used this new logo on the site, and got rid of the excessive white space in the old site.

To me, the old news page felt boring and messy. I reorganized the news page to include community stories in the top bar, and then continued emphasis on photos for the rest of the page. As you'll see, I used this same layout for the other pages to create cohesiveness in the site.

Because FHS has some very strong sports photographers, I wanted to emphasize our photos while maintaining the seasonal organization from the old site. I decided to put the seasonal widgets on the right sidebar, which viewers more places to click and shows off more of our strong photography.

To me, the old opinions page was derivative of our home page, and ultimately pulled attention from it. In order to avoid competition between the pages, I followed the template for the opinions page, as well. This look is much cleaner and makes better use of strong photography. Additionally, I stopped putting opinion stories in the home page showcase in order to be more impartial.

Multimedia

Thinglink and I sort of got off on the wrong foot, but once we got to know each other, it became one of my favorite mediums for interactive graphics.

I never have claimed to be a videographer, but my role as a digital media journalist has forced me to become proficient in iMovie. My skills are far from perfect, but they'll grow as I get more practice.

Another interactive medium I've become comfortable with is slideshows. Many ASF (alternative story form) online stories can benefit from an interactive slideshow, and I've used them in many stories as a tool to keep readers' attention.
